Fans will be happy to hear that MAPPA will be producing the anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man. But, what should we expect to see?

‘Chainsaw Man’ is fairly a new production, with its manga series written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto, which were published by Shueisha from December 2018 to December 2020 in the ‘Weekly Shōnen Jump’. The high number of copies being sold (over 11 million), made it the Nr.5 best-selling manga between 2020-2021. Just a few months later, a trailer was released for its anime adaptation, and it looks like the famous MAPPA studio will finally deliver what we’ve been waiting for.

The plot

When Denji’s father died, he was left with a massive debt without a method of repaying it. He was able to subsist by doing odd jobs and slaying Devils for the Yakuza thanks to a Devil dog he saved, named Pochita. Against these formidable demons, Pochita’s chainsaw abilities come in useful. When Yakuza betrays him and he is slain by the Zombie Devil, the chainsaw-nosed Pochita sacrifices himself to save his old master. Denji has now been reincarnated as a strange Devil-Human hybrid called the ‘Chainsaw Man’.

The story takes place in 1997 when the Soviet Union still existed, but the history being a bit different from our reality. In this universe, the Devils are created from human fear, and are often violent and hostile, with their strength being proportional to the amount of dread they inspire. However, humans may create contracts with them to exploit their power, such as the Devil hunters who specialize in hunting and utilizing those powers. Devils are born in Hell, and live in a cycle between the two worlds, migrating to Earth when they are murdered in Hell, and vice versa. In rare circumstances, like in Denji’s case, a Devil may possess the body of a deceased human, inheriting part of their memories and personality, and becoming a Fiend.

The trailer

The released trailer couldn’t possibly hype us more. The animation, the art style, the realism, and the overall fluidity of the action scenes easily showed us in under two minutes that this anime is going to be great. We knew MAPPA was good since they did Season 4 Part 1 of Attack On Titan, even though there were some questions raised back then, but we didn’t know they would do an even more incredible job.

Manga vs. anime comparison

Whether you’re a regular or casual manga reader, you can clearly say that the quality has been kept intact. The manga is characterized by attention to details, gruesome scenes, and cruel actions, and from the looks of it, the animators were determined to preserve the style. One thing I’m worried about, is the censorship and gore scenes reduction, to appeal to the masses and possibly avoid being flagged in different countries.

For the time being, it’s not clear if and how many changes will be made, but my guess is, that some elements will be purposely omitted, to make it more mainstream-friendly.

Don’t worry though. Nothing as bad as ‘Terra Formars‘.

Release date

No exact release date has been revealed yet. Perhaps the studio itself isn’t sure, given the pandemic and other setbacks. However, when a company shows an anime trailer, it means that within a year, we will watch the first episode. Some say it might be released in fall 2021. I hope it’s true.

Do you think the anime will be as good as the manga?
